Speaker meets with the Fiijan diaspora in Samoa, highlights role in strengthening national pride

Hon. Jitoko is currently in Samoa representing the Prime Minister the Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, at the country’s 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

Whilst addressing the members of the Fijian community, the Speaker conveyed sincere appreciation for their contributions and achievements abroad and for upholding Fiji’s reputation with pride in their host nation. He emphasised the importance of respecting local laws, contributing meaningfully, and conducting themselves as responsible and productive citizens.

“Wherever you are, you become part of that family,” Hon. Jitoko said, urging members of the diaspora to consistently reflect Fiji’s values and identity in their daily lives.

The Speaker also highlighted the important role of remittances sent by Fijians overseas, noting that these contributions continue to support families and play a vital role in strengthening Fiji’s national economy.

He further noted that at the heart of the diaspora’s strength and success is their relationship with God, which continues to guide their actions, values, and sense of purpose whilst living abroad.

The Speaker underscored that the conduct and contributions of Fijians overseas help shape how Fiji is perceived globally and remain a source of immense pride for the nation.

He concluded his address with a message of encouragement, calling on the diaspora to continue striving for excellence and to be exemplary individuals and ambassadors of Fiji wherever they reside.

For Rupeni Tamanikaiyaroi who is now a citizen of Samoa, the words of the Hon. Speaker has really challenged him to always carry the Fiji flag with pride at all times.
