Speaker leads Parliament delegation to the 66th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Accra, Ghana

Speaker of the Fijian Parliament, Hon. Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu is leading a Parliament delegation to the 66th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) that will be held in Accra, Ghana from 30 September to 6 October 2023.

The 66th CPC will be held under the theme: ‘The Commonwealth Charter 10 years on: Values and Principles for Parliaments to Uphold‘.  2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the Commonwealth Charter which outlines the principles and values of the Commonwealth.

Prior to the General Assembly that will be held on Thursday, 7th October 2023, a number of meetings and conferences will be attended by the Fiji delegation, which includes the CPA Executive Committee, the 39th CPA Small Branches Conference, the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP), the Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities (CPwD) networks and the 57th Society of Clerks at the Table (SoCATT).

Interesting topics that will be discussed include Gender Quotas in Parliament, the Threat of Terrorism to Statehood, the Impact of Population Changes on Small Jurisdictions, Small Parliaments working together, tackling climate change through Environmental Impact Assessments and updates on the role of Parliament for People with Disabilities.

The Hon. Speaker is accompanied by the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, the Hon. Sashi Kiran and Opposition MP Hon. Viam Pillay as the Champion of the CPwD Pacific Region.
