Fijian Parliamentary Delegation Attends the 15th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar in Ottawa

OTTAWA, CANADA – March 20, 2024 – A delegation from the Parliament of Fiji, led by the Hon. Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure [Assistant Minister for Home Affairs & Immigration] and Hon. Ioane Naivalurua [Opposition Member], is currently in Ottawa, Canada to participate at the 15th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar from March 17-22, 2024.

The theme for this year’ seminar is, “Strengthening Parliamentary Democracy: Opportunities and Challenges”. The seminar, which was last held in 2017 brings together parliamentarians from different countries to discuss various issues of mutual interest.

The seminar is being co-hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Canadian Branch of the CPA. Over the course of the seminar, there will be an opportunity to discuss important topics that underpin parliamentary democracy and the fundamental principles enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter.

The Fijian Parliament delegation looks forward to engage with their Canadian counterparts and exchange ideas on ways to strengthen parliamentary practices and promote good governance. More discussions will be held on Artificial Intelligence and Other Technology Trends: Challenges and Opportunities for Parliaments; Cybersecurity and Parliament Work; and Parliaments Role In National Emergency.

The Fijian Parliamentary delegation will also have the opportunity to meet with fellow parliamentarians from Australia, Ghana and Sri Lanka. The delegation is privileged to also attend the parliamentary proceedings in the House of Commons Chamber at the Speakers Gallery and the Governor-General’s Gallery at the Senate Chamber during their visit to Ottawa.

The participants also visited the Canadian Museum of History and will also have the opportunity to visit the Sugar Shack.

The seminar will end on Friday, 22 March 2024.
