Fiji and Samoa Speakers reaffirm strong parliamentary ties

Speaker of Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko, paid a courtesy call on his counterpart at the Legislative Assembly of Samoa the Hon. Auuapaau Mulipola Aloitafua Mulipola, reaffirming parliamentary relations between the two countries.

Hon. Jitoko extended his congratulations to Hon. Mulipola and the people of Samoa on their 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations, which concluded yesterday.

During their discussions, Hon. Mulipola highlighted ongoing challenges in maintaining parliamentary independence, particularly in the face of economic pressures and the continuing impact of fuel crises.

These challenges, he noted, underscore the critical importance of upholding democratic principles.

Regional co-operation was also a key focus, with both Speakers acknowledging the important role of the Pacific Islands Parliamentary Association (PIPA) in fostering collaboration among Pacific legislatures.

Both Speakers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing inclusive governance and ensuring that parliamentary institutions remain responsive to the needs of their people.
