The Womenโs Practice Parliament 2026 officially concluded on Thursday, bringing together women from diverse backgrounds to experience parliamentary processes, strengthen leadership skills, and engage in meaningful discussions on issues affecting communities across Fiji.
The programme provided participants with a unique platform to build confidence, deepen their understanding of parliamentary democracy, and amplify womenโs voices in decision-making.
In closing the event, Speaker Hon. Filimone Jitoko reminded participants that the Practice Parliament had demonstrated something of profound importance: women are not only participants in leadership and decision-making but are indispensable contributors to both.
โThe perspectives, lived experiences and insights that women bring enrich public discourse, strengthen institutions, and help shape solutions that are both inclusive and enduring.โ
โThroughout this programme, we have witnessed the value of diverse voices engaging thoughtfully and constructively in matters of national importance.โ
The Hon. Speaker encouraged participants to regard this experience as a foundation, rather than a conclusion.
โThe confidence, skills and understanding you have developed here carry responsibilities as well as opportunities. Whether in your communities, professional lives, faith-based organisations, civil society, or indeed in public office, I urge you to continue stepping forward to serve, to lead and to make a difference.โ
โLeadership is not defined solely by elected office; it is demonstrated wherever individuals work to improve the lives of others and strengthen the communities to which they belong.โ
The Minister for Women, Children, Social Protection and Cohesion, Hon. Sashi Kiran, congratulated the participants for boldly taking the step to be part of the programme.
โThe way you presented today, none of you need hand-holding. You were very articulate, you have done your research and you are accomplished. You must believe in it.โ
โYou are your own leader in your respective spaces, and for those who want to enter politics, get involved with your political parties, as the general election is not far away.โ
โWe are here, together with former women Members of Parliament, to mentor, guide and support you in your political journey.โ
