The Speaker of the Fijian Parliament and Chancellor of the University of Fiji the Hon. Filimone Jitoko, delivered a strong message at the University of Fiji’s 2025 Graduation Ceremony today, celebrating the achievements of 304 graduates across diverse disciplines.

In his remarks, Hon. Jitoko emphasised the transformative power of education, quoting Malcolm X: “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

He reminded graduates that their degrees were not merely certificates but roadmaps for service to their families, communities, and the nation.

The Speaker urged graduates to embrace values of service, respect, and resilience as they navigate challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and economic development.

He called on them to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, honouring cultural heritage whilstdriving innovation.

Highlighting gender progress, Hon. Jitoko noted that 204 of the graduates were women, reflecting their growing leadership in fields such as law, science, and technology.

“This is not only a testament to the growing leadership of women in higher education but also reflects their increasing presence in fields traditionally dominated by men, such as law, science, and technology. Their achievements today pave the way for a more inclusive and empowered future for Fiji,” he said.

The Speaker also commended the University’s Schools and Centres for their contributions to national development, including:

  • School of Business and Economics– Recognised globally with the Eduniversal Palmes of Excellence award and strengthened industry partnerships.
  • School of Science and Technology– Achieved international research recognition, including Dr Ramendra Prasad’s ranking among the world’s top 2% scientists.

  • Centre for iTaukei Studies– Preparing for a landmark new building to promote cultural and academic excellence.

Hon. Jitoko concluded with an inspiring message drawn from Dr Martin Luther King Jr, “Be the best of whatever you are.” He urged graduates to strive for excellence, integrity, and compassion as ambassadors of the University of Fiji and the Blue Pacific.

“Graduates of 2025, your time is now! The Moana awaits its captains. Go forth and navigate with courage, integrity, and the enduring spirit of the Fijian people. Let your lives be defined not by what you take, but by what you give back,” the Hon. Speaker declared.
