This afternoon, Hon. Filimone Jitoko, Speaker of the Fijian Parliament, met with Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the UK House of Commons, to reaffirm the strong and enduring relationship between our two Parliaments.
Hon. Jitoko expressed his gratitude to the CPA UK for its continued support in strengthening parliamentary democracy in Fiji. The two Speakers committed to deepening co-operation through future exchanges and capacity-building initiatives.
Hon. Jitoko also met with the officials of the CPA UK Branch to discuss areas of collaboration and support that would benefit Fiji’s MPs.
Later in the evening, the Hon. Speaker attended a reception hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPG), on behalf of His Excellency the President, Hon. Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. The event marked the formal announcement of the APPG Fiji chapter.
The APPG Fiji chapter essentially would foster UK-Fiji relations, promoting cultural, economic, and diplomatic ties. It is envisaged that this chapter would advocate for Fijian interests in Parliament, highlight contributions in trade and heritage, and strengthen collaboration on climate action, sustainable development, and diaspora engagement for a shared and prosperous future.
