𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐏𝐈𝐏𝐀 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨-𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

As Pacific countries continue to navigate the impacts of climate change, economic vulnerability, food security, sustainable development, and geopolitical shifts, institutions such as PIPA play an increasingly important role in fostering co-operation and ensuring Pacific priorities remain at the forefront of regional and global discussions.

Participating in Session One of the PIPA’s first ordinary General Assembly, the Fijian Parliament joined fellow Pacific legislatures in reaffirming their commitment to democratic governance, regional solidarity, and people-centred development.

Speaker of the Fijian Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko emphasised that PIPA provides a unique space for Pacific parliamentarians to learn from one another and build relations that deliver tangible outcomes for their communities.

“PIPA matters because it gives Pacific nations a stronger voice. Whilst each of our countries faces its own unique circumstances, we are united by common challenges and shared aspirations. Through dialogue and co-operation, we can develop solutions that reflect Pacific realities and Pacific priorities.”

PIPA serves as an important forum for parliamentarians to exchange experiences, strengthen legislative practices, and enhance the effectiveness of parliamentary institutions across the region.

“Strong parliaments are essential to strong democracies. PIPA allows us to share knowledge, learn from regional best practice, and build institutions that are more responsive, accountable, and effective in serving our people.”

For Fiji, participation at PIPA reflects a commitment to regionalism and the belief that Pacific challenges are best addressed through collective action and mutual support.

“Whether it is climate action, sustainable development, economic resilience, or safeguarding democratic values, the Pacific is stronger when we work together. PIPA provides the platform for Pacific parliamentarians to turn shared concerns into shared action.”

Beyond parliamentary co-operation, PIPA also strengthens connections amongst Pacific peoples’ by promoting understanding, dialogue, and collaboration across borders.

“PIPA is about ensuring that Pacific voices are heard, Pacific perspectives are valued, and Pacific solutions are advanced. It reinforces our shared responsibility to work together for the benefit of present and future generations.”

As the PIPA’s first ordinary General Assembly continues, the Fijian Parliament remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen regional co-operation, advance democratic governance, and contribute to a resilient and prosperous Pacific region.
