๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ญ๐, ๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ญ๐ข โ Speaker of the Fijian Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko reaffirmed the importance of regional co-operation, shared learning, and collective leadership, during the inaugural opening of the Pacific Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (PIPA) General Assembly, where parliamentary representatives from across the region came together to discuss issues of common interest and strengthen partnerships amongst Pacific legislatures.
The Fijian Parliament delegation, led by the Speaker Hon. Filimone Jitoko, and accompanied by the Minister for Immigration Hon. Viliame Naupoto and the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Inia Seruiratu, joined their regional counterparts in discussions focused on advancing democratic governance, strengthening parliamentary institutions, and addressing challenges that continue to impact Pacific communities.
Speaking during โSession One: Pacific Agency in an Era of Strategic Competitionโ, Speaker Hon. Filimone Jitoko emphasised that the Pacificโs greatest strength lies in its ability to work together in pursuit of shared goals.
โThe issues facing our region do not stop at national borders. Whether it is climate resilience, sustainable development, economic recovery, or strengthening democratic institutions, Pacific countries are stronger when we work together, learn from one another, and speak with a unified voice.โ
The first ordinary General Assembly provided an important platform for Pacific parliamentarians to exchange experiences, share best practices, and build stronger networks that support effective representation and governance throughout the region.
Hon. Jitoko stated that regional parliamentary co-operation plays a vital role in ensuring Pacific perspectives are reflected in decisions that affect the future of the region.
“Our shared challenges require shared solutions. Forums such as PIPA allow Pacific leaders and parliamentary representatives to engage in meaningful dialogue, deepen mutual understanding, and develop collaborative approaches that benefit all Pacific peoples.”
The Fiji Parliament delegation welcomed the opportunity to contribute to discussions and learn from the experiences of fellow Pacific parliaments.
“The Pacific is connected by more than geography. We are connected by common values, cultures, and aspirations. Through continued co-operation and partnership, we can strengthen our institutions, empower our communities, and build a more resilient future for our region.”
The Fijian Parliament remains committed to supporting regional parliamentary engagement and fostering collaboration that advances democratic governance, sustainable development, and the collective interests of Pacific Island countries.
