Small Island Developing States strengthen unity at the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva

On the sidelines of the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, parliamentary representatives from five Small Island Developing States (SIDS): Jamaica, The Bahamas, Suriname, Cabo Verde, and Fiji – came together to reaffirm their shared commitment to unity and strategic co-operation on the global stage.
The meeting was chaired by the Hon. Inia Seruiratu, Leader of the Opposition in the Fijian Parliament, who was unanimously asked to continue serving as interim Chairperson until the next IPU Assembly. His continued leadership underpins Fiji’s dedication to championing SIDS interests in international forums.
Delegates highlighted the urgent need to amplify the voices of SIDS in global decision-making arenas, where their unique vulnerabilities and development priorities often require tailored approaches. They called for stronger solidarity and co-ordinated advocacy to more effectively influence international policy.
A key outcome of the meeting was a call to expand participation among other SIDS parliaments. Delegates emphasised the need for financial support from international organisations to help cover travel and participation costs, ensuring fair representation regardless of a country’s size or resources.
This gathering signal a renewed commitment to inclusive engagement and collective action, as SIDS work together to shape a more responsive and equitable international system.
