The Fijian Parliament delegation attended the first day of the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, with a strong emphasis on regional collaboration and gender advocacy.
The delegation actively engaged in the Asia-Pacific Geo-political Group (‘APG Group’) meeting and the Forum of Women Parliamentarians.
These sessions provided a platform for robust discussions on enhancing co-operation and promoting inclusive governance across the region.
A significant highlight for the Fijian delegation was the nomination of the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection the Hon. Sashi Kiran, to the IPU Working Group on Science and Technology.
This nomination from the APG Group marks a pivotal step in advancing innovation and evidence-based policymaking, reinforcing Fiji’s commitment to leveraging science and technology for sustainable development.
Looking ahead, the delegation will participate in the Governing Council and the General Assembly, where the Speaker of Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko, is scheduled to deliver a statement during the general debate that will focus on the Assembly’s overarching theme: “Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis”.
Fiji’s active engagement at the IPU Assembly reaffirms its dedication to multilateral dialogue, gender equality, and global co-operation in addressing pressing humanitarian challenges.
The Fijian parliamentary delegation is being led by the Speaker of Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko and includes the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection the Hon.
