The first election for members of Parliament under the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji was held on 17 September 2014. Term of Parliament is 4 year from the date of its first meeting after a general election of the members of Parliament. The President, upon the advice of the Prime Minister, issues a Writ for a new election after the expiry of each 4 year term.
The Electoral Commission is responsible for conducting the elections. Members are chosen by secret ballot and any individual who is 18 years of age and over is entitled to register to vote.
The election of members of Parliament is by a multi-member open list system of proportional representation, under which each voter has one vote, with each vote being equal in value, in a single national electoral roll comprising all registered voters.
The 2014-2018 Parliament which was dissolved on 30 September 2018, consists of 50 members although the Constitution provides for the Electoral Commission to review the membership of the Parliament prior to each election. The number of members can be changed depending upon the increase or decrease in the total population of Fiji. The Parliament that reconvened after the 2018 General Elections had 51 members.
For the 2022 General Elections, the Electoral Commission approved that the composition of Parliament will be 55 seats, which is an increase of 4 seats from the 2018 General Elections.
