District Advisory Councilors applaud efforts by the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights

Tailevu District Advisory Council Chairperson Mr Mohammed Altaaf Hussain has applauded the effort by the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights for bringing the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants Bill (Bill No. 35 of 2021) to the Waidalice community.

While commenting on the public consultation by the Committee on Monday, 15 November 2021, Mr Hussain said that the rural dwellers needed to be enlightened on the Bill.

“I believe this is something that is needed in the rural communities and also peri-urban communities where business people are not fully versed with accounting practices.”

“Many people may be successful in business but I believe they’re not fully aware of the requirements pertaining to their accounts which is submitted on an annual basis.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by Mr Shiri Krishna, the Advisory Councillor for Gallau and MH Compound Settlement in Rakiraki.

“We thank the Committee for coming all the way to Rakiraki to bring this important Bill to the members of our community.”

“Before, we pay a lot to the chartered accountants to prepare our financials. But now, if more chartered accountants will be available in Fiji, the costs will be brought down and this will be beneficial for us in the rural areas,” Mr Krishna said.

According to the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights Hon. Alvick Maharaj, this Bill will affect all members of the community, especially the business people in terms of preparation of cash flows and filing tax returns with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.

Hon. Maharaj is inviting members of the public to attend the public consultations that will be conducted at the following venues –

  • Wednesday, 17 November @ 6pm – Tavua Andra Sanatan Primary School
