A delegation of five Members of Parliament from Fiji, comprising of the Economic Standing Committee, embarked on a high-level study visit to New Zealand from November 17 to 22, 2025, to deepen their understanding of accident compensation systems and legislative frameworks.
Led by the Assistant Minister of the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Sakiusa Tubuna, the delegation engaged with key stakeholders and institutions to inform the development of Fijiβs ACC Future Coalitions and legislative reforms.
During the visit, the Fiji delegation met with the Auckland ACC Futures Coalition, including a member of Point Chevalier Social Enterprises, Chris Casey and economist, Susan Magaret St John, renowned for her extensive research on New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC).
Robust discussions highlighted New Zealandβs fault-free accident compensation model, which applies regardless of fault, covering incidents beyond the workplace. The delegation also learned about the self-sustaining funding model sourced from investments and the strategic emphasis on injury prevention and safety awareness initiatives Fiji aims to incorporate to reduce injuries and foster a safety-conscious culture.
In addition, the delegation visited the New Zealand Parliament, where they participated in a traditional Mihi Whakatau ceremony, reciprocated with a serenade of βAu Rai Vei Kemuniβ.
The delegation then paid a courtesy call to the Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament, Rt Hon. Gerry Brownlee and engaged in meaningful discussions on contemporary issues affecting both nations, including sports, bilateral collaboration, and legislative priorities.
The study visit also included a productive meeting between the Secretariat of Fijiβs Economic Standing Committee and their counterparts from New Zealandβs Education and Workforce Committee. Led by Mr. Ajendra A. Pratap and Ms. Awantika Raj, the discussion focused on best practices, capacity building, and potential collaborations to strengthen parliamentary committees.
Furthermore, the delegation held a detailed dialogue with the Select Committee on Education and Workforce, chaired by Hon. Bates of the National Party. Key topics included the mechanisms of New Zealandβs accident compensation scheme and their applicability within the Fijian context. A subsequent meeting with Hon. Bates explored avenues for closer collaboration, addressing issues such as migrant workers and enhanced parliamentary cooperation.
