SUMMARY:Women’s Mock Parliament Aims to Empower Future Women Leaders
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Mock Parliament is an important initiative aimed at empowering aspiring politicians and national leaders. It is just one of the many ways in which Parliament is promoting the participation of women in democratic processes. \nThis was highlighted by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua whilst opening the three-days programme yesterday. \n“We are so happy to revive the Fiji Women’s Mock Parliament after a lapse of seven years. This event is all part of our efforts towards achieving gender equality and promoting women’s empowerment. It will also help break down barriers and provide women with the skills and knowledge needed to make a meaningful impact in politics and governance.” \n“This event will provide a unique opportunity for you to learn more about the Fijian Parliament\, its key functions and procedures\, the important role of Parliamentary Committees and\, understanding some key policy issues\,” the Hon. Deputy Speaker said. \n58 women from across the country will have the opportunity to build their capacity and confidence to participate in democratic and decision-making processes and to become change-makers in their communities. \nParticipant Ms Lailanie Burnes\, the Sponsorship and Hospitality Manager for the Fijian Drua said it is an honour to participate in this year’s Mock Parliament. \n“It is a great opportunity for us as women to gain valuable experience in politics and understand the challenges and opportunities that are available.” \n“When you look at the population balance\, there is an imbalance in terms of representation of women in Parliament. Currently\, there are only four women that are Ministers and Assistant Ministers. For us to have diversity and equal representation\, it is vital that we have opportunities like this to gain that experience\, to build the confidence and to have diversity when it comes to decision-making in the country.” \nThrough interactive sessions\, debates\, and hands-on activities\, the Women’s Mock Parliament serves as a vital platform for encouraging more women to enter the highest decision-making institution in the country. \nThis programme is made possible through the support of the UNDP Fiji Parliament Support Project which is being kindly supported by the governments of Australia\, Japan and New Zealand. \n-End-
